Color statements are one of the simplest, and most exciting ways to perk up any monotone outfit. On a day to day basis I, like many others, find myself having to wear rather boring outfits… whether it be for work, school, or dress code enforced functions. Now, I don’t know about you…. but those kinds of looks are not really my thing. So, I’m here to give you a few examples of how you can accomplish the “color statement.”

Add a colored shoe!

A classic way to go about doing this is to go red. A pair of patent leather red pumps are sure to intensify any plain old outfit.

One of my favorite ways to use this technique, however, is to go with a funky color. My personal favorite would be teal.

Accessorize in Color!

Jewelry

Giant funky cocktail rings – these are a fabulous way to spice up your outfit without feeling like too much of a statement.

Bangles! - Bangles in crazy colors and patterns make an excellent addition to any outfit, but when paired up with a simple outfit can be the beautiful focus of the entire ensemble. (which is definitely a good thing if the outfit is boring)

Pendant Necklace – A pendant necklace is one of the least risky ways to pull off a color statement. Pairing your outfit up with a colorful pendant necklace will give your outfit just enough of an edge to make you comfortable, but not enough to make anybody else uncomfortable.

*I would advise against giant colored hoop earrings, and things of that nature, if you are in a professional environment.

Clutches – A clutch is just about my favorite way to change up an outfit of any kind. Just be sure to choose wisely.

Using print in place of color – This is an excellent way to go about using this technique. Choose your favorite print whether it be black and white Victorian, or zebra print!

Now, one last thing before I leave you. A warning: Avoid color/print clash at all cost. If you have to have more than one color statement be sure that the two compliment each other. For example: Using a hot pair of red pumps and a leopard print clutch to amp up your outfit is definitely doable. While using a pair of leopard print flats and a zebra print clutch would be a fashion faux pas!

Of course, you can only ever take somebody else’s opinions about fashion with a grain of salt. You can do whatever strikes your fancy with your outfits, these are just a couple of tricks I’ve picked up throughout the years.

As a MAC Pro member you’re entitled to certain discounts and other fabulous benefits!

What discounts are offered to me as a MAC Pro member?

MAC Pro Member Make-up Artists are offered a discount of 40%, while Aestheticians, Cosmetologists, Hairstylists, Fashion Stylists, Nail Technicians, Costume Designers, Models, On-Air Talent/Performers, and Photographers can receive a 30% discount. MAC Pro Student Members receive a 20% discount. But remember to bring photo ID with you! Otherwise you may not get your discount!

What other benefits are offered?

I haven’t had the opportunity to attend any of the classes or pro-to-pro parties — the number of events at my local MAC Pro Store are pretty limited – so I’ll leave it to MAC Pro to describe them!

Master Classes:

Master Classes are workshop-type events offered to MAC Pro and MAC Pro Student members. According to MAC,

The events consist of makeup demonstration and explanation of application technique-theory. Classes are designed to give the participant a basic understanding of the topic presented.

Meet M·A·C Pro Senior Artists. Informative and informal. This is the ultimate networking occasion for members to share their ideas about the industry with M·A·C Artists and other members of the artist community.

Some restrictions apply. Limit five complimentary shipments per year, per member.

How to become a member

To become a MAC Pro or Pro Student Member, you can download an application from the MAC Pro website or pick up an application from your local MAC store! You can fill out the application and drop it off to your local MAC Pro store, or via snail mail to:

M·A·C PRO MEMBERSHIP, PO Box 435, 3219 Yonge Street, Toronto, Ontario M4N 3S1

BUT! You have to send in a few more docs than just your application!

For a MAC Pro Student membership, you have to include a photocopy of photo ID, along with proof of enrollment in a Make-up Artistry class or Performing Arts school. The school you attend also plays a part! MAC lists all eligible schools here. You can only become a MAC Pro Student member if your school is listed there! You also have to include a payment of $10 by cheque or credit card to cover the cost of your membership.

For a MAC Pro membership, it’s a bit trickier. You must include a copy of photo ID, but also professional documentation. That means business cards, letters of recommendation, a copy of your license, degree, certificate, etc.You also have to include a payment of $35 US to cover the cost of the membership.

For more information, you can visit the MAC Pro website here.

How long does my membership last for?

MAC Pro Student memberships expire after 6 months, while the MAC Pro memberships can be renewed every year for $35.

I have to admit, I was so excited when my MAC Pro Student membership arrived in the mail! I did a little dance while my boyfriend laughed at me! There was one I had, however, when I applied for my application – and I wasn’t able to find it online…

How long does it take to receive my membership?

This was by far my most unanswered question. I checked the mail daily for my membership after I applied, and had no idea how long it would take to finally see my reply in the mail! So, I talked to the manager of my local MAC store and was told that most applications take between 4 to 8 weeks to receive your memberships. Mine took about 3 to 4 weeks, so I was pretty thrilled that I didn’t have to wait for 2 months! I can imagine, however, it depends where you are sending your membership from! If you’re sending it from Ontario, for example, I can imagine it would be faster than mailing from, say, California.

** Remember! You don’t have to be a PRO member to buy PRO products! You can still buy them at your local MAC Pro store, OR call the number listed on the MAC pro website! **

Ever since I was little I have absolutely adored Barbie. Now. don’t get me wrong, I don’t agree with the body image she portrays: seriously? Who can have a chest that big with a waist that thin? Doctors say if she was real, she’d face plant as soon as she stood up and her ankles broke. Lovely.

But when it comes to Barbie’s clothes and makeup, I was definitely inspired as a little girl. And for some reason, when I think PINK, I think Barbie.

So it’s no wonder I’ve fallen in love with this latest look: Minimal eyes & cheeks, and bright Barbie pink lips!

I know this seems like a primarily “Spring/Summer” look, but I plan on wearing this year-round!

As for lip colours, here are a few of my favourites:

MAC Lipstick in ChatterBox MAC Lipstick “Pink Nouveau” Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick “Celeb”

Pair these gorgeous shades with a matte face, minimal eye makeup, and thick lashes and you’re set!

Let me know what shades you love for Barbie lips by commenting below!

Brushes are some of the most important tools a make-up artist can have. They allow you to create different effects, textures, and coverage levels with foundations, eyeshadows, and other cosmetics products!

But here’s the kicker: they can also be incredibly expensive!

So before you go out and spend a small fortune on brushes, it’s important to know which kind you prefer, and what brushes you should start with.

In my opinion, not every single cosmetics wearer needs expensive, high quality brushes. BUT, if you are serious about makeup, invest a lot of time in experimenting with different looks, higher quality brushes would probably be best for you.

Here’s another important thing to consider: the average makeup artist uses 5 brushes. Just 5! While we may have many more, to complete a look, most of us have found 5 brushes we adore and stay true to.

If you are new to using make-up brushes, it’s my opinion that you should start with a less expensive brush set. This way, you can experiement with the different brush types and find 5 or 6 “favourites”. Then you can eventually invest in higher-quality brushes, and instead of buying 5 that you might like, you know you’ll make good use out of all of them!

If you’re looking for a great line of inexpensive brushes, my favourites are the Professional brushes from ELF (Eyes Lips Face) Cosmetics. Their brushes are synthetic, making them less expensive, but they’re easy to clean and certainly get the job done! I purchased mine for 70% off during one of their promotional deals, and now they are offering a discount on their professional line again!

You can find ELF products online at http://www.eyeslipsface.com/.

ELF is also PETA approved, meaning they are a certified cruelty-free brand.

If you have found your ideal brushes and are hoping to invest in a higher-quality brush, these are some of my favourites:

MAC

Of course MAC, right? Pretty much every MUA loves this brand. Their brushes are in the 25-45$ range, and phenomenal. I’ve had some of my MAC brushes for more than 5 or 6 years, and I use them daily. They offer every kind of brush imaginable, and, in my opinion, the prices are very reasonable.

Find them at a MAC store or counter, or online at MACcosmetics.com

MAKEUPFOREVER

Makeupforever’s brushes are slightly more expesive than MACs, but are also excellent quality. Their brushes range from about $25-60. They are made of either synthetic (for some concealer brushes) or natural bristles.

You can find them in some department stores, Shoppers Drugmart, or online at http://www.makeupforever.com/

CRUELTY FREE HIGH QUALITY BRUSHES:

SMASHBOX

I haven’t personally tried SMASHBOX brushes, I have only tested them in stores. They are approximately the same price as MAKEUPFOREVER; I chose to buy MAKEUPFOREVER simply because their powder brush was larger, and at the time I was searching for an all-over brush. However, I do love SMASHBOX because they are a cruelty free cosmetics brand. One thing that concerns me about natural bristle make-up brushes is how the fur is collected to create them. SMASHBOX actually raises their own animals, and brushes them once a year to collect the animals’ fur to create these brushes. Now, part of me questioned the conditions these animals would be living in, but after doing some research I’ve learned that SMASHBOX is actually supported by PETA…and although there is controversy about PETA euthanizing animals unnecessarily, they are generally very strict about animal living conditions. You can find these brushes in certain departmentstores, or online at http://www.smashbox.com

As for my 5 favourite brushes?

MAC 168 Large Angled Contour Brush

MAC 190 Foundation Brush

MAC 239 Eye Shading Brush

MAC 222 Tapered Blending Brush
